FHCRC Summer Research
Announcement for 2018 Summer Research Program
Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP): Fred Hutchinson Interns for Summer 2018
In 2009 Whitman College entered into a summer research partnership with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) in Seattle. Students have been supported to work on projects ranging from the molecular evolution of HIV pathogenesis, to cellular markers of Graft vs Host Disease in bone marrow and stem cell recipients, to cell cycle regulation in tumor cells, to efficacy of HPV vaccines. Funding initially came from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. In 2015, a generous alumni donor stepped up to continue the partnership.
In 2018 two more students will be funded by Whitman to work in a laboratory at the FHCRC for 9 weeks as members of the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) in Basic Sciences, Human Biology, Public Health, Vaccine and Infectious Diseases, or Clinical Research. The stipend for the program is $ 4,700. The intern program runs from Monday June 11 through Friday August 10 and students must be able to commit to the entire program. For more information about the summer program and work of recent interns at Fred Hutchinson, see
The FHCRC SURP Steering Committee at Whitman College is now soliciting applications from students who will be entering their final year at Whitman College in fall of 2018 (Dec 2018 or May 2019 grads).

A selection committee of science faculty will evaluate the applications and two students will be selected and notified in late January.
