Your Questions Answered (FAQ)
For many competitive industries (such as finance, tech, consulting and government fellowships), recruiting cycles begin as early as late summer or early fall for the following year. For nonprofits, creative arts, publishing, education and many local businesses, hiring often occurs closer to the start date (1–3 months prior). We recommend stopping by the CCEC early in the academic year to outline a timeline specific to your field. In the meantime, check out this recruiting timeline and additional resources in the Handshake Resource Library.
Handshake is an excellent starting point because every employer posting on Handshake is explicitly seeking college students and Whitman talent. However, a balanced job search uses multiple channels:
- Handshake for campus recruiting and verified student roles.
- Niche/Industry-specific job boards for specialized fields.
- LinkedIn for networking and finding Whitman alumni at target organizations.
If you decide to use AI tools in your job search we recommend using them to help brainstorm keywords, tailor bullet points to job descriptions, or outline cover letter structures. However, never copy and paste AI-generated text directly. Employers easily recognize generic AI copy. Always review, personalize and verify that the content accurately reflects your authentic voice and experience. Remember: always remove personal information (e.g. name, address, phone number, etc.) when using AI tools.
Workplace Accommodations: You are legally protected under the ADA and are not required to disclose a disability on your initial application unless you need an accommodation for the interview itself. Most applicants request accommodations after receiving a job offer.
Visa Sponsorship (F-1 Students): F-1 students using OPT generally do not require sponsorship for their initial post-graduation work period. Be prepared to explain your work authorization clearly to employers. Schedule an appointment with Whitman’s Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) for tailored advice about the OPT process.
Yes! While some structured entry-level programs have fixed salaries, many offers leave room for discussion and negotiation either on base compensation, signing bonuses, relocation assistance or flexible work arrangements.
