Monday, August 21

8:45–10 a.m. Breakfast and Welcome
Introductory greetings from Sarah Bolton, Whitman College President; John Johnson, Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion; and Alzada Tipton, Provost and Dean of the Faculty; as well as new faculty introductions.
10:15–11:20 a.m. Getting to Know Campus
A tour of the Reid Campus Center with Juli Dunn, Senior Associate Dean of Students, followed by a full campus tour with student tour guides.
11:30 a.m. Building Class Community / Fostering Belonging
Inclusive Teaching Session I
12:30–1:15 p.m. Lunch
1:30–2:15 p.m. Faculty Governance and Current Events on Campus
Discussion with elected faculty leaders
2:30–3:15 p.m. Navigating the First Year: Perspectives from Newer Faculty
Discussion with recently hired faculty
3:30–4:15 p.m. Course Management: Teaching with Canvas
Introduction to Canvas sites from David Sprunger, Director of Instructional and Learning Technology, including time to work on your own site.
4:30–6 p.m. Reception Hosted by the Committee of Division Chairs
Informal social time with staff and faculty who support the academic program, featuring local food and drink


Tuesday, August 22

9–9:45 a.m. Equitable Course Policies
Inclusive Teaching Session II
9:45–10:30 a.m. Writing Inclusive Assignment Prompts
Inclusive Teaching Session III
10:45–11:30 a.m. Student Support
Discussion with staff who coordinate disability support services, tutoring and academic coaching, and Whitman’s “Care Team”.
11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Penrose Library
An introduction to resources and partners that support both your teaching and scholarship.
12:15–1:15 p.m. Lunch with Librarians and Technology Services (WCTS) Staff
1:15–2 p.m. Break
2–2:45 p.m. Campus and Classroom Safety
with Greg Powell, Director of Security
2:50–4:30 p.m. Concurrent Small-Group Sessions

Information about managing class lists, add/drop procedures, grade reports, etc.

Wednesday, August 23

9:30 a.m. to Noon Whitman Employee Benefits and Responsibilities
A session for finishing any paperwork necessary for employment, learning about benefits and some HR policies, and fulfilling mandatory reporter training.
12:30–1:30 p.m. Tenure Track: Timeline and Procedures
Information for tenure-track faculty on review procedures leading up to tenure and managing professional development accounts. (All other faculty are finished with orientation at noon.)
