CIEE: Cape Town Arts and Sciences

Through CIEE, qualified Whitman students can directly enroll at the prestigious University of Cape Town (UCT), one of Africa’s leading research universities located on a beautiful campus in the stunning, coastal city of Cape Town. UCT is an academically rigorous, comprehensive university offering a wide range of courses in the natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities. Study at UCT affords students an opportunity to study amidst a multi-ethnic and racially diverse student body of 28,000 with other international students from elsewhere in Africa and around the world.

Fields of Study:

A wide range of fields are available in the Natural Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Eligibility:

Minimum cumulative gpa of 3.0; students must be self-motivated and have initiative to work in an academic environment that is much less structured that what they are accustomed to in the United States

None

Credits:

15-18 credits per semester - Required Courses:
3 to 4 courses at University of Cape Town, at least one course must have Africa-related content

*Note: 15-18 US credits equals 70-82 HEQF credits at the University of Cape Town

Intercultural Communication and Leadership, 3 credits
CIEE Independent Research course, 3 credits
Directed Independent Research, 3 credits

12 HEQF = 2.5 Whitman credits
18 HEQF = 4.0 Whitman credits
24 HEQF = 5.5 Whitman credits
30 HEQF = 6.5 Whitman credits
36 HEQF = 8.0 Whitman credits

None

Housing:

Students may choose to live in host families arranged by CIEE, in apartment-style residence halls with 2-3 African students, or in shared apartments with a local Resident Assistant.

Meals:

Students who live in host families will be provided with breakfast and dinners by the family. Students who live in the residence hall apartments or off-campus apartments cook for themselves in their apartment’s kitchen or take their meals on campus or at local eateries.
