Eligibility requirements:

  • U.S. citizen

  • Matriculation in an accredited undergraduate degree program in the U.S. (Boren Scholars must remain matriculated in their undergraduate programs for the duration of the scholarship and may not graduate until the scholarship is complete.)

  • Science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) student

Award summary and conditions: Boren Scholarships are a special initiative for undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors. The scholarships fund up to $8,000 for summer study (minimum of 8 weeks) for students majoring in STEM fields. STEM field majors are also encouraged to apply for semester- and year-long programs offered by Boren.

Students applying for all Boren scholarships are expected to have a significant language component as part of their proposed study-abroad program. Although many STEM students choose study-abroad programs that offer courses in STEM fields, this element is not required. Study options include the following:

  • Language study only: Study-abroad program may focus entirely on language study.
  • Language study with academic coursework: Study-abroad program may include language study as well as other academic coursework.
  • Language study with a STEM-related internship: All internships should be academic in nature, unpaid, and with a non-governmental organization.

Note: Boren Scholarships fund the study of language and culture in a program of the applicant's choosing. Boren does not choose or recommend programs. Program selection is determined in consultation with Off-Campus Studies and other advisors.
