Life Sciences application period: July 18, 2023 to October 16, 2023

Computer and Information Science and Engineering, Materials Research, Psychology, Social Sciences, and STEM Education and Learning application period: July 18, 2023 to October 17, 2023

Engineering application period: July 18, 2023 to October 19, 2023

Chemistry, Geosciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Physics and Astronomy application period: July 18, 2023 to October 20, 2023

Eligibility requirements: 

  • U.S. citizen, U.S. national or permanent resident
  • Graduating senior or post-graduate*
  • Completed no more than 12 months of current full-time graduate study or the equivalent
  • Pursuing a research-based master's or doctoral degree in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields supported by the NSF

*Note: Effective as of the 2017 competition, the NSF will limit graduate students to only one application to the GRFP, submitted either in the first year or in the second year of graduate school.

Award summary and conditions: The purpose of the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the vitality and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce in the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in fields within the NSF's mission.

The benefits include:

  • Three years of support over a five-year fellowship period
  • $37,000 annual stipend
  • $16,000 cost-of-education allowance to the institution
  • International research and professional development opportunities 
  • XSEDE Supercomputer access

  • Personal statement (3 pages maximum)
  • Proposed plan of research essay (2 pages maximum)
  • Letters of recommendation (3) 
  • Transcript(s)
