Eligibility requirements:

Citizens, nationals, and permanent residents (holders of a Permanent Resident Card) of the United States, and individuals granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program, regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation
Superior academic achievement - GPA, class rank, honors, etc.
Committed to a career in teaching and researching at the college/university level
Planning to/or enrolled in an eligible research-based program leading to a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree at U.S. educational institution
Individuals who require a minimum of three years study to complete their Ph.D./Sc.D. degree as of the 2019 fall semester
Study in an eligible major (see application particulars)
Individuals who have not yet earned a doctoral degree at any time, in any field

Award summary and conditions: The Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation's college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.

Fellows must begin in September of the year of award and remain full-time for the academic year. After first year, funding may be deferred for up to two years but all three years of support must be used in five years.

Personal statement (not to exceed two pages, double-spaced) that describes the applicant’s background and experience and commitment to the goals of the Ford Foundation Fellowship Program.
Letter of recommendation (3-5)

Selection process: Applications are evaluated by panels of distinguished scholars. Academic records, essays, letters of recommendation, the application and other appropriate materials are all considered as well as the appropriateness of the chosen institution for the plan of graduate study and the likelihood of using all three years of support.
