Class of 1973 Reception hosted by President Sarah Bolton at Sherwood House, 1107 Alvarado Terrace. The reception will take place out of doors (bring a light jacket). Directions from campus to Sherwood House: Go east on Boyer Avenue, at Clinton Street turn left; Sherwood House is located one block behind Green Park Elementary School. Attire: Business casual.

Faculty Presentation by Moira Gresham

Cosmology Now and Then: Nathaniel Shipman Associate Professor of Physics, Moira Gresham, will give a tour of our Universe and its history as physicists and astronomers understand it today---zooming out from Earth to the farthest out and back we can see. She will highlight changes in the understanding and practice of cosmology since 1973.

The program will include the announcement of the results of the Class of 2023 Reunion Fund project and presentation of the Alumna of Merit Award to Ceil Lucas ’73. Attire: Business casual.

Archives Open House

Visit the Whitman College and Northwest Archies to view materials on display from early college history as well as from the early 1970s.
Visit the Elbridge Hadley Stuart Room

Built during the 1970s expansion of Penrose Library, the Stuart Room showcases the collection of Napoleonic artifacts, including Napoleon’s doctor’s desk, donated to Whitman by the Stuart family. We will take a tour of the room, interact with several items from the collection, and learn about the role Mr. Stuart and his family played in the development and construction of the library expansion.

Class of 1973 Dinner at Harper Joy Theatre. Then gather ‘round the Alexander Stage for HJT reflections and stories from classmates. The bar is compliments of the Whitman College Alumni Association. Attire: Casual.
Visit the Whitman Mission National Historic Site
9 a.m.-Noon | 328 Whitman Mission Road
Park Ranger Kate Kunkel-Patterson ’13 welcomes alumni to tour the grounds and the Great Grave, visit the museum and view a short film about the complex relationship of the Whitmans with the Cayuse people. Kate and other rangers will provide talks throughout the morning. Shuttles will be available for those who would prefer not to drive to the site.

Class of 1973 Robe Selection
10-10:30 a.m. | Baker Center
Class of 1973 Robe Selection at Baker Center, 364 Boyer Ave. All members of the Class of 1973 are invited to march in the processional (graduates and non-graduates from Whitman College, only, please). Caps and gowns provided (if you have your own hood and/or gown you are welcome to bring them). After the ceremony please bring your cap and gown back to Baker Center, where lunch will be provided. Attire: Casual. Depending on the weather it can be quite warm wearing a robe, so dress appropriately. Water bottles will be provided.

Class of 1973 Cap and Gown Photograph on the steps of Baker Center, 364 Boyer Ave. Then line up on the north and south sides of Boyer Avenue to congratulate members of the Class of 2023 as they walk by! Follow the Junior Marshal and the Class of 2023 banner to your reserved seats.
Whitman College 2023 Commencement
11 a.m.-1 p.m. | Memorial Building front lawn
The Whitman College 2023 Commencement Exercises; lawn of Memorial Building. Seating for spouses and guests of alumni marching in the processional are on the right-hand section of folding chairs (when facing the stage). Alumni Office staff members will be on duty to help direct you to your seats; look for the Guests of Class of 1973 signage.
Please note: In the event of severe weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors. Consequently, this means that the participation in the processional for the Class of 2023 will be cancelled. Instead, the group will be able to watch the ceremony in Hunter Conservatory where the ceremony will be broadcast live. Weather may also delay the start of the ceremonies by one hour.
