We can create culture change!

What is CHECK IT?

CHECK IT is a student-led movement that empowers us with the skills to take action when we witness sexual violence, dating violence and stalking. By CHECKing IT, we can\ create a safer, more consent-centered campus community where we support survivors and make it clear that we don’t tolerate harm at Whitman.

What does it mean to CHECK IT?

To CHECK IT means to check in, to intervene, and to take action when we see harm happening around us. We know when to CHECK IT when we see a CHECK IT moment. A CHECK IT moment is witnessing an actual or potential moment of harm that may include:

  • An absence of consent
  • Sexual assault
  • Dating/Domestic Violence
  • Stalking
  • A high risk situation where someone may be targetted

What does check it do?

Peer Educators and volunteers, supported by Prevention Specialist Michelle Shin, work together to

  • Provide engaging and interactive workshops that build skills around consent, bystander intervention, healthy relationships, and survivor support
  • Engage in creative outreach that connect students to violence prevention
  • Host events that match student interests and are in collaboration with other campus groups

Where did check it come from?

CHECK IT was originally launched at Cal Poly Humboldt in 2014 by Cal Poly Humboldt students, Mary Sue Savage (then Prevention Coordinator, now RVCC’s Executive Director), and Paula Arrowsmith-Jones (then Executive Director of North Coast Rape Crisis Team).

Welty Health & Counseling Center and Whitman students partnered with Recognize Violence, Change Culture (RVCC) to launch the program on our campus
