CHECK IT
A new foundation for by-stander prevention.
Whitman College is introducing CHECK IT as the foundation of our student-facing sexual violence prevention programming, beginning in the 2025–2026 academic year.
Originally developed at Cal Poly Humboldt, CHECK IT is a nationally recognized bystander intervention and community care campaign developed by Recognize Violence Change Culture. More than a program, CHECK IT is a community that encourages students to take action in the moment to disrupt harm and look out for each other. Its strength lies in peer education, creative messaging and inclusive approaches grounded in identity, courage and real connection.
At Whitman, CHECK IT will be adapted to reflect our campus culture and values. Students will play an important role in shaping the messaging and programming as we launch this initiative through workshops, campaigns and peer-led outreach.
Why CHECK IT?
- CHECK IT empowers students to act in situations involving potential harm.
- It centers equity, creativity and belonging so that every student can see themselves as part of a safer, more connected campus.
- It supports Pillar 3: Multi-Tiered Education within Whitman’s Culture of Respect work, ensuring prevention is layered, student-centered and sustained across the campus community.
- Informed by Violence Prevention evidence based research including Socio-Ecological Model of prevention, Behavioral Science Frameworks and Foundational Bystander Intervention literature.
Whitman College was featured in the Culture of Respect blog, which highlighted our student-led prevention efforts and Sex Week programming.
