Enhance Academics

Students by Lakum Duckum

Inquisitive minds, a spirit of collaboration, innovation and relationship-based learning have always defined Whitman’s educational program. To continue our tradition of excellence in this rapidly changing world, we must advance the Whitman curriculum to better prepare our students for their futures.

Today, emerging fields such as bioethics, environmental humanities and others demand our increased attention. Faculty and students are engaged in cross-disciplinary collaboration examining such topics as the economy, the environment, global issues, ethics and politics. Students require experiential learning opportunities such as community-based learning, student-faculty research, internships, field studies and study abroad to enrich their understanding and prepare them for graduate school and careers. These approaches require us to invest in new faculty positions and new and expanded programs that enhance student learning.

With increased resources, Whitman will educate and inspire the next generation of graduates to become creative catalysts of change, responsible citizens and the leaders of tomorrow.

Whitman’s campaign will build on the strength of more than 125 years of academic excellence and reinforce the value of a liberal arts education in the 21st century.

Whitman must

Strengthen the faculty

By adding a dozen faculty and strengthening support for the entire faculty, Whitman can ensure expertise in emerging and interdisciplinary areas while continuing to provide students with a high level of collaborative engagement and personal attention.

Provide experiential learning opportunities

By increasing the quantity, quality, and range of experience-based classroom activities, field-study, research and internship opportunities, Whitman can prepare every student for today’s complex world.

Globalize the curriculum

By infusing global themes into the curriculum, developing programs that enhance global awareness and expanding opportunities for off-
campus study, Whitman will create an environment in which students possess cross-cultural understanding.

The Campaign in Action

The Global Studies Symposium

Launched in 2009, the Global Studies Symposium brings together an interdisciplinary panel of experts for presentations on issues of profound importance. In its first three years, the symposium addressed themes of Torture, Contagion and Global Media. The format of the symposium is unique in an undergraduate setting. Experts from around the world make presentations to which Whitman faculty and students prepare and present formal responses. The audience then is invited to join the dialogue. This format encourages debate and reflection in the community and encourages students to develop their own voices in matters of global significance.
