The Whitman swim teams broke a total of 10 school records at the Northwest Conference Championships in mid-February. The men’s squad broke eight of those records while placing a strong third in the team scoring, its best finish since 1987.

A young women’s team placed fourth.

Lauren Flynn ’11 led the women’s team, breaking two sprint freestyle school records set in 1992 by Michelle Zinanti ’94. On the men’s side, Chris Bendix ’12 set new school marks in the two longest freestyle distances (1,000 and 1,650 yards), breaking records set in 1996 by Garrett Hageman ’01.

Noel Sollom-Brotherton ’09 in the 200-yard backstroke and Jamie Nusse ’11 in the 500-yard freestyle lowered their own school records in those events. Sollom-Brotherton also broke Nusse’s record in the 500 free, but he did it in the same race in which Nusse went just a little faster. Chad Trexler ’11 (pictured in the pool) set a new record in the 200-yard breaststroke, breaking a mark set in 1996 by Jason Ridle ’97.

Nusse and older brother Ysbrand Nusse ’09, along with Sollom-Brotherton, also helped Whitman set new school records in the three freestyle relays. Mitchell Lee ’12 shared in two of those relay records while Eric Molnar ’10 contributed to a third. Former Whitman swimmers who saw their relay records fall were Ridle, Hageman, Nathan Engman ’96, Mike Horn ’99 and Clint Collier ’08.

Men's Basketball

Chris Faidley ’10 capped four superlative seasons by finishing second on Whitman’s all-time career scoring list with 1,705 points. He led the NWC in scoring for a second straight season, twice earning NWC Player of the Week honors. Brandon Shaw ’12 also earned one of the NWC weekly awards during his first season.

Women's Basketball

Michelle Krall ’11 was NWC Player of the Week in December after sparking a victory over Washington University (St. Louis, Mo.), which held a No. 9 national ranking at the time.

Track and Field

Kristen Ballinger ’11 and Sara McCune ’12 have been named to the 2008 NCAA Div. III All-Academic Team as selected by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
