The Sea debuts at Harper Joy Theatre

An Edwardian coastal village fills the Friemann Stage at the Harper Joy Theatre from Dec. 9-12. 

In noted British playwright Edward Bond’s only comedy, The Sea, Willy Carson meets Rose, the girl to whom his drowned friend was engaged, and falls in love with her. Their romance is caught between the forces of order, in the form of a group of dotty society ladies, and chaos, personified by a mad draper anticipating an invasion of space aliens.

“As we approach the holidays, it seems even more important to examine and appreciate the ways we create community, and the ways in which community falls apart,” said director Cythia Croot, assistant professor of theatre.  “Bond's play deals with humor, absurdity, grief and renewal in equal measure.  In The Sea, we watch society unfurl as entrenched factions go to war, churchmen pray, sages drink and young love blossoms despite it all.”
