Shelby Hearn serves as the Director of LGBTQIA+ Student Services at Whitman College, where they provide strategic leadership for programs and services supporting the wellbeing and success of our campus’s LGBTQIA+ student community. They oversee the Queer Resource Center, advise LGBTQIA+ student organizations and coalitions, facilitate educational workshops and dialogues, and implement signature community programs throughout the year. Shelby is an educator and advocate who has dedicated their career to fostering radically welcoming campuses where all students can thrive, and has been involved in queer community organizing, advocacy and support work for over 10 years.  

Prior to joining Whitman in July 2024, Shelby served as Associate Director of Student Support at the University of Utah, and previously as Assistant Director of the LGBT Resource Center at the same institution. They were a 2022 recipient of the University of Utah Beacons of Excellence Award for reinventing excellence with creative and innovative solutions. Shelby holds a Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration from Loyola University Chicago, and a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature with a minor in Gender & Sexuality Studies from the University of West Georgia.
