The Department of Music at Whitman College has a rich history of musical excellence. Both majors in music and non-majors receive opportunities to explore and enrich their full musical potential. Students majoring in music can specialize their studies in curricular tracks including Composition, History, Jazz, Performance, and Theory or pursue studies that balance these areas with the Standard track. These courses of study prepare students for a career in music, additional study at top graduate schools, and for a lifelong enjoyment of music.
Whether through intensive study or personal enrichment, most students at Whitman College are involved with music performance and study. The department offers studio lessons, as well as chamber and large ensemble opportunities in all major areas of performance. Additionally, the department regularly performs full opera and music theater productions. The above-mentioned opportunities and all music courses are available to Whitman students, regardless of major. With a 300-seat recital hall, listening center and library, electronic music studio, 14 teaching studios, 25 practice rooms, and 30 music faculty, the Whitman Music Department has the resources needed for students to realize their full musical potential.
