Math Placement

Getting you into the right Math class is important to your success at Whitman. Below are some steps to help you get an idea which of our Math classes is the right starting point for you. If you work through these steps and still have questions, please feel free to set up a chat with any member of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. We look forward to getting to know you.

Pursuing a Science or Math Major

It’s probably a good idea to begin or continue working through the calculus sequence. Here is some guidance to help you choose the right calculus class.

AP Calculus Credit

If you have taken the Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus course, and you scored a 4 or 5 on the exam then you should not take the placement exam. Enroll in either Math 126 (Calculus II) if you had the AB curriculum or Math 225 (Calculus III) if you had the BC curriculum.

Without AP Credit

If you don’t have AP credit for calculus, you should take the online placement exam (called ALEKS PPL). The website will offer some choices for review before you take the exam, so you can get an accurate placement.

Math Placement Test

Once you complete the exam, you'll be advised, based on the results, which course to enroll in. Our standard placement recommendations are based on your test results. However, if you have any questions, please reach out to a member of the Math Department.

More Guidance

The calculus sequence starts with either Math 124 (Introduction to Calculus) or Math 125 (Calculus I)- The topics are generally the same, except that Math 124 meets four days a week (rather than three), and has substantial review of algebra and trigonometry.  Both of these courses focus on differential calculus, and prepare you for Math 126 (Calculus II), which is integral calculus and series.  Finally, Math 225 (Calculus III) is differential and integral calculus, but for multivariate and vector valued functions.

Math for Non-Science Majors

If you simply want to take a mathematics course (for fun or for satisfying the college’s general requirements), consider choosing a course that satisfies your Quantitative Analysis degree requirement. Those courses are listed in the Quantitative Analysis section of the College Catalog with specific courses listed at the bottom of the page.
