In early February 2010, days from giving birth to twins, Chantal Conkling Valentine ’96 and her husband, Shane, were busy with the details of a different offspring: Their international baby cuisine cookbook, which was beginning to draw the attention of regional and national food distributors.
Jam packed life
Faith Craig Petric ’37, who has among her admirers long-time friend and folk legend Pete Seeger, is known as “The Fort Knox of Folk Music” because of her memory: She knows the lyrics, tunes and histories of more than 1,000 songs.

Diethard Pabel ’98 and Eriko Aoyama-Pabel ’97 didn’t find each other – or Irish music – until the spring of Eriko’s senior year, when Diethard was a German exchange student at Whitman.

Cushing Eells, the Whitman College Alumni Association revived the on-campus celebration of Founder’s Day and asked students to consider a few historical questions as well as this philosophical one: What do I know about the history of the place I inhabit?
