Calling all debaters: Whitman debate coaches, both present and past, and the alumni office have teamed up to organize a Debate Reunion in conjunction with Spring Reunion Weekend 2011.
"We haven’t done a debate reunion for 14 years, and I thought it was time," said Jim Hanson, professor of forensics and current debate coach. Hanson, along with Bob Withycombe, professor of rhetoric and film studies and debate coach from 1980 to 1993, and Remy Wilcox, debate coach from 1969 to 1980, are coordinating the reunion, which is set for April 28-May 1, 2011.
"I’m hearing from a good number of our alumni," Hanson said. "Former students I have talked to have either been really excited about it, making every effort to attend, or apologetically telling me they just can’t make it."
Planned activities include a program on the history of the Whitman Speech and Debate Program, group dinners and debate exhibitions. "Some alumni have challenged each other to a public debate," Hanson said.
"This will be a reunion that interacts a little more than usual with current students," said Jason Arp ’94, assistant director of alumni relations. Debate students will help with the registration process and, perhaps, participate in a panel discussion or mock debate.
"The last reunion was very enjoyable," Hanson said. "Many alumni who attended before I came to Whitman have such great stories and enthusiasm for what we do. It really is energizing," he said.
