Appendix 2 – Emergency Action Plan

Emergencies on campus can take many forms including natural disasters, natural gas leaks, fires, acts of violence, and others. The purpose of this plan is to provide general guidance for Whitman employees, students, and visitors in the event of an on-campus emergency. For more detailed guidance regarding specific types of emergencies, please visit the Emergency Management page on the College’s web site.

In the event of a life-threatening emergency CALL 911

In order to be prepared for an emergency in your workplace you should:

  • Be familiar with the information found at the Emergency Information web page.
  • Know the location of emergency exits, and plan and practice evacuating the building via different routes.
  • Review the information at What to Do in an Emergency at least once each year.
  • Know your department’s specified assembly location(s) and/or check-in procedure.
    • Each department should designate a primary and an alternate location where its employees will meet in the event of a building evacuation.
    • Each department should have an emergency check-in system (e.g. phone contact instructions) to account for employees in the event of an emergency
    • Evacuation, assembly, and check-in information should be disseminated to students in each class/lab session at the beginning of each semester.
  • Supervisors are responsible for accounting for all personnel within their department.

Employees with first aid training may administer first aid to injured persons until emergency medical assistance arrives.

The Whitman College Emergency Response Plan will be activated, as necessary.

Local police and fire agencies have emergency management responsibility for the City of Walla Walla including Whitman College. The College has National Incident Management System trained staff whose responsibility it is to provide information, technical, and logistical support to responding agencies during on-campus emergencies. Whitman College is responsible for managing post-emergency recovery operations on campus.

For more information regarding emergency action or response to major disasters see the Whitman College Emergency Response Plan.
