4 Tips for Making College Friends

By Zoe Perkins

When I came to Whitman, I packed up my car and drove away from everyone and everything I knew. I was terrified. But it was also exhilarating because I had the freedom to be my true self without anyone’s preconceptions.

For those first few days, I terrorized my new classmates by constantly announcing to everyone within earshot, “Hi! I’m Zoe!” My orientation groupmates were never safe at opening week events because, inevitably, I would pop up to say hello. My overzealous introductions must have worked, though, because I found a group of wacky and wonderful Whitties who I can now proudly call friends.

When you find your way to Whitman with a car full of stuff and a stomach full of knots, don’t worry—here are 4 tips to make some college friends of your own.

1. Just say hello!

I know it’s basic, but it’s the best tip I have to offer. Whitties are the friendliest folks you’ll ever meet! Especially during the first weeks of the school year, everyone on campus is delighted to meet someone new.

2. Go to opening week events.

I met my closest friends at Night @ Reid. When I went to the event I was nervous and alone, but I left with four new friends and a few new stories.

3. When at first you don’t succeed …

Try, try again! We’ve all heard it before, but it’s true. The first person you meet probably won’t be your best friend for life. The second might not be either. Or the third, fourth or fifth. Just keep saying hi and you’ll find your person (or people) in no time!

4. Be yourself.

No matter who you are, when you present your truest self to the world, your truest friends are bound to follow.

Finally, remember Whitman chose you to be here. There’s something about you that makes you the perfect Whittie—you belong here. And if you see me on campus, be sure to say hello. Unless I say hi first!
