Geology - Computer Science
Introduced in 2021, the Geology-Computer Science major will provide an education for students that aligns with current needs in society for earth scientists to have a strong background in computation.
The earth sciences are a truly interdisciplinary field of study. Solving earth science problems from a computer systems perspective is increasingly common throughout the field. A Geo-CS major would have the tools, skills and knowledge that will be essential for their post-Whitman experiences. This background will be relevant for students planning to enter graduate school in earth and environmental sciences, as well as the needed background for careers in the government or private sector, for example in the rapidly expanding job market associated with climate change adaptation and mitigation.
