Pášx̣apa Elders Advisory Council for Education (PEACE)
The Pášx̣apa Elders Advisory Council (PEACE) was formed in 2024 to serve in an advisory capacity to the Whitman College Special Assistant to the President for Native American Outreach. The council is formed of five CTUIR members serving annual, renewable terms. Learn about the current PEACE elders.
PEACE serves multiple important purposes, including sharing cultural guidance on the needs and perspectives that are unique to Native American students, especially those of the Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla tribes.
Elders possess deep knowledge of traditions, language, cultural practices, and community insight that can enrich the college’s understanding and respect for the students and their cultures.
The PEACE will add to the development of a campus-wide support system for our Indigenous students that are culturally tailored to their counseling, mentorship and advocacy needs that will bring a more meaningful and authentic sense of belonging and connection for them on campus, which literally is located on their traditional homelands.
The PEACE can advise on the development of curriculum, community outreach, cultural events and celebrations.
Overall, the PEACE plays a crucial role in promoting the well-being, success, and cultural richness of CTUIR and Indigenous students within Whitman College’s environment.
