HHMI Fellowship (Howard Hughes Medical Institute)

Eligibility requirements:
- 3.0 GPA (cumulative and in the sciences)
- Undergraduate student (30 credits completed)
- Completion of BIOL 160/161/170/171 and CHEM 131/132/231/232 or equivalent (students majoring in disciplines other than Biological sciences may substitute appropriate introductory level science courses)
- Faculty sponsorship
Award summary and conditions: The Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the College of Chemical & Life Sciences, University of Maryland supports the independent research activities of talented undergraduate students under the direct supervision of a faculty investigator/mentor. The Undergraduate Fellowship program encourages the submission of applications from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. Fellowships offer support for independent student research for periods of up to one year. Fellows receive stipends of $1,500/semester and $3,000/summer (up to $6,000/year). Fellows are also eligible to receive up to $1,000/year to offset the costs of necessary research supplies.

Proposals should be sent as an email attachment to HHMI@umd.edu and to consist of the following items in this order:
- Personal statement (1 page)
- Proposal abstract (200 words or less)
- Proposal narrative (2-3 pages single spaced, excluding references)
- Budget consisting of an itemized list of materials and supplies
- Transcript(s) - unofficial is acceptable
- Curriculum vitae
- Letter of support from faculty mentor (submitted separately to HHMI@umd.edu)
