Linking Text Accessibility Guidelines

The college is committed to meeting Federal laws regarding website accessibility. To help reach as many visitors as possible while providing them with the best experience possible, the following are guidelines for creating accessible content when working with links.

1. Link text should make sense out of context without the surrounding sentence, paragraph, etc.

Why? Screen reader users typically do not have their screen readers speak the entire page top to bottom. Instead the skim the page and screen readers often pull out links without the surrounding sentence or paragraph.

Avoid: Seniors can view the schedule of required exams for more details.

Consider: Seniors can view the schedule of required exams for more details.

2. Link text should be descriptive and not repeated on the page.

Why? Speech recognition software allows users to speak the text of the link they would like to follow. If multiple links on the page have similar text, the experience of using the software may be confusing or cumbersome.
