Rausch Tied for Fourth at Golf Invitational

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Junior Max Rausch shot a 5-over par 77 on Sunday and is tied for fourth place after the opening round of the Whitworth Invitational at the Spokane (Wash.) Country Club.

Rausch, whose round included three birdies, prevailed against weather and course conditions that were anything but ideal, according to Whitman men's golf coach Peter McClure.

"Sunday's round was a test for any golfer," McClure said. "The wind was gusting and at times seemed to be coming from all directions.

"Plus, the greens were running as fast as any course we have played, maybe ever. It was not uncommon to hit a putt and have the ball stop six to 10 feet past the hole. Given the conditions, the scores for all of our players were higher than expected."

Sophomore John Abercrombie and freshman Geoff Burks both shot 84 while junior Brian Barton was tied at 85 with seniors Steve Campbell and Grant Brandal.

In the team scoring, Whitman was fifth in a six-team team with a 330 total. Whitworth was first at 310 and Linfield second at 315. Pacific (321) and George Fox (327) were next in line with Pacific Lutheran (337) bringing up the rear.

Linfield's Alex Fitch shot a 1-over par 73 for the day's low individual score.

The invitational concludes Monday with a second round of 18 holes.
