Men paced by Rand at Sundodger

Seattle, Wash. - Whitman was led by senior Cory Rand (Mill Valley, Calif.), who clocked 23:26.61 and placed 65th in a field of 236. Another senior, Taylor Mesojednik of Bellevue, finished 82nd in a time of 26:31.38. Missionary juniors Spencer Corwin (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and Joe Mayo (Yorba Linda, Calif.) ran within four seconds of each other. Corwin turned in a 27:00.83 time for 112th place and Mayo ran 27:04.78 to finish 114th.
Also turning in team-counting times for the Missionaries were freshman Whitney Griggs (Honolulu), junior Taylor Nelson (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Carl Garrett (Mercer Island, Wash.). Griggs finished 139th in 27:31.06, Nelson was 161st in 28:01.57 and Garrett 169th in 28:15.01.
Four other Missionaries — sophomore Colin Domonoske (Claremont, Calif.), junior Chris Farley (Toppenish, Wash.), sophomore Alex Porter (Renton, Wash.) and freshman Matt Gabel (Bellevue, Wash.) broke the 29-minute barrier and a fifth, freshman Greg Holdman (Sudbury, Mass.), narrowly missed as he finished in 29:01.63.
Chip Jackson of Western Washington University was the overall individual winner in a time of 24:54.55.
The Whitman men outran Northwest Conference rival Pacific Lutheran, which finished 17th in the team standings. But the Missionaries trailed Whitworth (6th), Puget Sound (7th), Lewis & Clark (10th), Linfield (11th) and Pacific (14th) among NWC teams entered in the big race.
Whitman’s next race is scheduled for Sept. 29 when the Missionaries run in the Charles Bush Invitational at Bush Park in Salem, Ore.
