Women's Tennis Wins Semi, Advances to Sunday Showdown

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Living to play another day, the Whitman College women's tennis team knocked off Whitworth 5-0 in a Northwest Conference Tournament semifinal match Saturday afternoon in McMinnville, Ore.
Whitman, now 16-4 on season, advances to play Linfield in Sunday's tournament final with a ticket to the NCAA Division III national championships at stake.
Linfield, which is hosting the four-team tournament, shut out Willamette 5-0 in Saturday's other semifinal.
Whitman, ranked No. 8 in the West Region, seized command at the outset with a sweep in doubles for a 3-0 lead.
Courtney Lawless added the first point in singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 slot to extend Whitman's lead in the team scoring to 4-0 .
Twin sister Morgan Lawless then notched the clinching fifth team point with a 6-0, 6-2 romp at No. 3 singles. The remaining matches in singles were left unfinished.
Whitman's Alyssa Roberg was a 6-2 winner in her first set at No. 1 singles, although opponent Alli Marshall had a slim 3-2 lead in the second when play was halted.
Whitworth players won first sets at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, and they held second-set leads in two of those matches when Whitman clinched the team victory.
Roberg and Courtney Lawless raced to a quick 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles to score Whitman's first team point. Morgan Lawless and senior Emily Rolston made it 2-0 Whitman with an 8-6 triumph at No. 2 doubles.
Hannah Palkowitz and Maddy Webster finished the doubles sweep, winning 8-4 at No. 3.
Whitworth, ranked No. 10 in the West Region, ended its season with a 13-6 record.
