Axelrod Adds Goalkeeper Expertise to Coaching Staff

Brett Axelrod, who was named Northwest Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2008, is in his first year as an assistant coach for the Whitman College soccer teams.

As the goalkeeper coach for both the men's and women's programs, Axelrod works with the keepers on both technical and tactical aspects of the position as well as being a part of the overall defensive strategy.

As a player at Whitman, Axelrod was known for being aggressively agile and having foot skills comparable to most field players. His coaching philosophy, based on his own playing experience, is based on the concept that goalkeepers must be soccer players first and goalkeepers second.

A four-year starter for the men's team, Axelrod was named to the All-NWC Second Team as a junior in 2007 and to the First Team in 2008, when he also netted defensive player-of-the-year honors.

During his senior season, Axelrod collected 10 shutouts (four coming in double-overtime 0-0 ties) while allowing just eight goals in 19 games. His goals-against average and save percentage both ranked in the top five nationally for NCAA Division III goalkeepers. He was named NWC Player of the Week three times during his senior campaign.

Axelrod finished his Whitman career with a total of 22 shutouts. He received the 2009 Borleske Trophy, which is awarded annually to the top male athlete at Whitman. The trophy, awarded by a vote of the entire varsity coaching staff, recognizes athletic ability and accomplishments, leadership and sportsmanship qualities, and contributions to the campus as a whole.

After graduating from Whitman in the spring of 2009 with a degree in sociology, Axelrod trained with Virginia's Fredericksburg Gunners, a member of Mid-Atlantic Division of the Premier Development League (United Soccer Leagues). He then moved to the Seattle area to train with the Kitsap Pumas, who compete in the PDL's Northwest Division. While living in Seattle, Axelrod worked as a local recruiter for the Whitman men's and women's programs, traveling back to Walla Walla once a week to work with the goalkeepers.

In 2008 and 2009, Axelrod also was a volunteer assistant coach for the boys varsity team at Walla Walla High School, addition to coaching the U-17 Blue Mountain SC Earthquakes.

In 2010, Axelrod moved back to Walla Walla to coach at Whitman and to fulfill his duties as the Director of Marketing and Stadium Operations for the Walla Walla Sweets baseball team, a summer collegiate wood-bat team that competes in the West Coast League.
