Bruins Pull Away to Win Women's Golf Classic, Whitman Second

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- With Kelsey Morrison shooting her second straight 1-under par 71, George Fox pulled away from the field on Sunday to win the women's Northwest Conference Spring Classic at Wildhorse Golf Course in Mission, Ore.

The Bruins shot 308 for a team score in the closing round to with the tournament with a 36-hole total of 620.

Whitman, the tournament host, carded a 330 on Sunday to finish second overall with a 650 total. Whitworth also shot 330 in the final round take third at 658.

Other tournament scores: Linfield 331-350 681, Willamette 338-352 690, Pacific Lutheran 356-360 716, Pacific 385-385 770, and Puget Sound 419-438 857.

Morrison won medalist honors by 11 strokes over the runner-up, Whitworth's Nicole Lomax, who shot 75 on Sunday to finish at 153.

Catelyn Webber for Whitman and Jill Westendorf for George Fox carded 78 on Sunday to finish as part of a three-way tie for third place at 158. Whitman's Elaine Whaley was also part of that deadlock after shooting 80 in the second round.

Two more George Fox players, Abby Mann and Loreece Magsanide, tied for sixth with 160 totals. Next in line were Whitworth's Emily Guthrie 163, Willamette's Nicole Smith 164, and Linfield's Hannah Christianson 165.

Team results from the Spring Classic combine with results from last October's Fall Classic to account for 50 percent of the season-long scoring used to determine the final NWC standings and crown a conference champion.

George Fox won both events and sits in first place with 16 points. Whitman was second in both tourneys and has 14 points.

Linfield, Willamette and Whitworth are tied for third with 10 points apiece. Other team totals at the midway point in the scoring system are Pacific Lutheran 6, Pacific 4, Puget Sound 2, and Lewis & Clark 0.

The NWC Championship tournament, slated for April 21-22 at Columbia Point in Richland, Wash., accounts for the final 50 percent of the season-long scoring.
