Zajicek Leads Whit Women to Third Place

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Sophomore Katie Zajicek shot a second-round 78 on Sunday to finish in a tie for fourth at the Pacific Invitational at Quail Valley Golf Course near Banks, Ore.
Whitman, in third place after Saturday's opening round, picked up six strokes Sunday on second-place Whitworth but still finished six shots behind the Pirates in the final team scoring.
George Fox carded a 313 team score on Sunday to finish first with a 36-hole total of 629.
With a 337 in the second round, Whitworth took second place with a 655 total, six strokes in front of Whitman.
Others contributing to Whitman's 331 total in Sunday's round were junior Tate Head 82, first-year Missionary Sarah Debs 85, and sophomore Catelyn Webber 86.
Also playing for Whitman were sophomore Elaine Whaley (86), first-year Missionary Kelly Sweeney (88) and junior Caitlin Holland (92).
"The only team that beat us in today's round was George Fox," Whitman coach Skip Molitor said. "We made up six strokes on Whitworth but didn't quite catch them."
Other teams and final totals in the tournament were Linfield 680, Willamette 686, Corban 739, and Pacific 773.
The Whitman women return to action next weekend when it hosts the Whitman Invitational at Veterans Memorial and Wine Valley.
