WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Courtney Lawless, a first-year player on the Whitman College women's tennis team, has been named Northwest Conference Student Athlete of the Week for the third time this season.

Lawless teamed with junior Alyssa Roberg to win all five of their matches at No. 1 doubles. She also won three times at No. 2 singles and twice at No. 1 singles.

Lawless and Roberg, ranked No. 4 in doubles in the West Region, enjoyed their biggest victory of the week against Trinity, jumping all over Mackenzie Knopp and Thavindra Ekanayake by a decisive 8-2 margin. Knopp and Ekanayake are No. 2 in doubles in the most recent regional rankings.

Lawless, No. 4 in the regional singles rankings, added a one-sided victory at No. 2 singles in the Trinity match, beating No. 14 Katie Griffith 6-1, 6-1.

Lawless also made notable contributions last week as Whitman, No.10 in the regional team rankings, posted a solid 6-3 victory over No. 8 UT-Tyler.

Playing at No. 1 singles, she notched an 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 21 Amy Friesenhahn and teamed with Roberg for an 8-6 doubles victory over Friesenhahn and Sydni Hermsdorf, the region's fifth-ranked duo.

After opening the season with a loss at No. 1 singles to a player from the NAIA's Lewis-Clark State, Lawless has ripped off 12 straight victories.

She and Roberg, after losing their first doubles match of the season, have won nine straight decisions since then. Lawless has also won twice with Maddy Webster, another first-year player, to help boost her overall doubles record to 11-2.

Whitman, now 6-1 in the NWC and 11-3 overall, plays a big match Saturday at Whitworth (6-1 NWC, 10-3 overall).
