Men's Tennis Snares Fifth NWC Triumph in Three Days

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Winning for the fifth time in three days, the Whitman College men's tennis team downed Willamette 9-0 in a Northwest Conference match Monday afternoon in Salem, Ore.

It was Whitman's third consecutive shutout of an NWC opponent, and it elevated its record to 12-3 on the season and 8-0 in conference.

Whitman, ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division III, has won 12 straight matches after opening the season with losses to a pair of NCAA Division I schools and an NAIA Division I team.

Monday's loss dropped Willamette to 3-3 in the NWC.

After logging a sweep in the opening round of doubles, Whitman rolled to straight-set victories in each of the six matches in singles, although some of those sets were close ones.

Senior Conor Holton-Burke needed a second-set tie-breaker to subdue Garrett Vincent 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 3 singles. The scores were similar at No. 1, where sophomore Andrew La Cava beat Joshua Wong 6-3, 7-5.

Freshman James Rivers also had a competitive set at No. 4 singles, scrambling past Will Cooper 6-2, 7-5.

Other Whitman winners in singles included junior Jeff Tolman, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Cody Ferguson at No. 2, and sophomore Sam Sadeghi, who downed Devin Abney 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5.

Senior Adriel Borshansky had a relatively easy time at No. 6 singles, posting a 6-0, 6-1 win.

Holton-Burke teamed with junior Matt Tesmond for an 8-4 victory over Vincent and Abney at No. 1 doubles. Tolman and La Cava got past Wong and Ferguson 8-5 in the No. 2 spot while it was Rivers and Sadeghi knocking off Cooper and Cameron Thompson at No. 3.

Monday's victory stretched Whitman's NWC regular season winning streak to 86. It hasn't lost to a conference opponent during the regular season since April of 2006.

Whitman continues its Spring Break schedule with three matches later this week in California, starting with a neutral-court battle with New York's Rochester University on Friday in Claremont.
