WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- With junior Peter Clark and freshman Scott Martin carding rounds of 80, Whitman College finished second in a field of three Northwest Conference in an 18-hole men's golf match on Saturday at Canyon Lakes in Kennewick, Wash.
Whitman, which also got an 81 from sophomore Andrew Welch, finished with a 326 team score, five strokes in back of Whitworth. Pacific was third with a 332 team total.
Junior Geoff Burks completed Whitman's team score with an 85. Sophomore Jonathan Standen also played as part of five-man Missionary team, shooting 87.
Jesse Salzwedel shot 76 and teammate Stephen Plopper added a 77 to pace Whitworth to the team triumph. Also scoring for the Pirates were Joey DeGroff and Christian Boudreau, who both shot 84.
Nolan Tippy's 81 and an 82 by Roger Hults led Pacific, which also got scoring rounds of 83 from Nicholas Johnson and 86 from Garrick Knowles.
Saturday's one-day event allowed the teams a final tune-up for next weekend's 36-hole NWC Championship Tournament, which will also be played at Canyon Lakes.
Whitman heads to that tournament in second place in the NWC's season-long scoring race. Whitworth is in fourth place while Pacific is in eighth.
For Whitman, Martin had two birdies en route to his 80. Clark, who joined the Missionary roster after completion of his varsity basketball season, shot 43 on the front nine before finishing with a 1-over par 37 on the back.
Four more Whitman golfers played Saturday as individuals.
Freshman Cheney Doane had the best round, shooting 81, while a second freshman, Nathan Fisher, carded an 85.
Junior Drew Raher, also a late addition to the golf roster by way of the basketball team, shot an 87 while senior John Abercrombie shook off a stiff neck to shoot 93.
