Where in the World
After sitting across the room from each other at a meeting at Stellenbosch University in April, Sarah Thomsen ’87, who is now at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, and Jeff Knezovich ’04, who is based at the University of Sussex in the U.K., realized that they were both Whitties. They are pictured at the Groot Constansia winery outside of Cape Town, South Africa.
Hailun Zhou ’12 writes, “My dad, Chunlai Zhou, was applying for a visa at the U.S. embassy in Beijing to come to my graduation, and while he was talking to the visa officer, the woman realized that he was visiting Whitman and asked him to move to another line. She told my dad that the guy working in the other line happened to be a Whitman alumnus and he would be more than happy to talk to him. My dad moved to the line where Kevin Daucher ’04 was working and he very excitedly asked my dad about his visiting plans; he told my dad that he was an economics major at Whitman. He also mentioned that his favorite professor was Halefom Belay and asked me to say ‘hi’ to him. Kevin then issued the visa for my dad. My dad was so happy about the wonderful coincidence and called me instantly about the encounter.”
