After the Southern Poverty Law Center released 2011 report that gave Washington State a failing grade for its Civil Rights history requirements in public schools, Whitman responded by initiating Whitman Teaches the Movement. The result of collaboration between Whitman College, Walla Walla Public Schools, and the Southern Poverty Law Center's Teaching Tolerance project, WTTM trains Whitman students to visit local classrooms and teach creative, historically specific lessons from the U.S. Civil Rights Movement.

The project enriches the educational experience of everyone who participates and emphasizes the present-day importance of the Civil Rights Movement. Watch the video below to learn more about the program!
