What to Expect

Fall orientation is an extensive 5-day program which includes a wide variety of activities. There are a number of events planned specifically for new students as well as events to which the entire campus community is invited to attend.  In order to prepare you for your on-campus arrival in August, we mail a comprehensive packet of information to all new students which we refer to as the New Student Orientation Packet.

The New Student Orientation Packet, which is posted the third week of May, contains very important information on topics including registration and class selection, arrival information, a Scrambles (optional wilderness orientation programs) registration form and much more.

*9 a.m.-2 p.m. • POST OFFICE MAILBOXES ASSIGNED, Reid Campus Center Ground Floor. Stop by the Post Office to receive your mailbox assignment.

9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. • FRIDAY LUNCH TICKETS ON SALE, Reid Campus Center Foyer. The Thursday night dinner is complimentary for new students and their families. Family members who want to have lunch on Friday may purchase meal tickets in advance or at the event. There is a $14.25 charge for adults and a $7.00 charge for children 12 and under. The Friday lunch is complimentary for new students. 

9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. • PACKAGE PICK-UP, Reid Campus Center G02. Packages mailed to the college over the summer may be picked up during this time.

10 a.m.-2 p.m. • REFRIGERATOR RENTALS, Reid Campus Center, Room 202. Small residence hall refrigerators are available to rent for the academic year.

11 a.m.-2 p.m. • ON-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT FORMS, Reid Campus Center, Room 207. Students who intend to work on campus need to complete three required forms. When completing the paperwork, please be ready to present the following information: bank account number and routing number for direct deposit; filing status and number of exemptions to complete your W-4; and acceptable documents such as a current passport OR a valid photo ID with either an original birth certificate or original social security card to complete the I-9 form.

11 a.m.-2 p.m. • “PRINTING AND NETWORK,” Residence Hall Main Lounges. Students are encouraged to bring their laptops to the Technology Services table in the Anderson, Jewett, Lyman, or Prentiss main lounge to have their laptop set to connect and print to the Whitman computer network. If students with desktop computers need help, please call 509-527-4976 to schedule an appointment.

1-2 p.m. • CAMPUS TOUR, Penrose Library. Take a walk through the Whitman College campus with a student guide. Tours leave from the front steps of Penrose Library.

1:15-2:15 p.m. • RECEPTION FOR STUDENTS & PARENTS WHO ARE WHITMAN ALUMNI AND/OR FROM THE WALLA WALLA VALLEY. New students whose parents are alumni of Whitman College and their families, as well as new students from the Walla Walla Valley, are invited to a reception hosted by President Kathleen Murray and the Whitman College Alumni Association at Sherwood House, located at 1107 Alvarado Terrace.

*2:30-3:15 p.m. • WELCOME TO WHITMAN, Sherwood Center Main Gym. The orientation team will welcome the entering class and provide one or two fun surprises. Come meet your new peers, ham it up for the class photo and walk away with Whitman swag!

*3:30-4:45 p.m. • WRITING ASSESSMENT. All incoming new students are required to participate in a short writing assessment. Writing samples will be read and evaluated prior to students meeting with pre-major advisers on Friday morning. Students who would benefit from additional writing assistance will be notified by email on Friday morning and be enrolled in Composition 170. Please do not bring any electronic devices (i.e. cell phones, tablets or computers); all needed materials will be provided. RAs and SAs will provide you with your writing assessment location.

5-6:30 p.m. • DINNER, Prentiss Hall Front Lawn (Reid Campus Center in case of rain). Dinner is complimentary for new students and their families.

*6:30-10:30 p.m. • RESIDENCE HALL MEETINGS AND ACTIVITIES, Residence Hall Sections and Main Lounges. New students will meet with their Resident Assistants, Student Academic Advisers and section mates. This session for new students will include an orientation to residence hall life as well as a discussion about living with roommates, followed by some fun hall activities. Come meet your new neighbors and your hall’s staff!

Global Education: Learn how to gain global experiences and perspectives while at Whitman. Includes faculty from Foreign Languages, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Classics, Off-Campus Studies and the new concentration in Global Studies. Maxey Auditorium.

THEME SESSION 2--9:30-9:55 A.M.

Selecting Science Classes: Get an overview of introductory-level science courses at Whitman for both majors and non-majors. Includes faculty from Astronomy, Biology, BBMB, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Mathematics and Physics Maxey Auditorium.

THEME SESSION 3--10-10:25 a.m.

Health Professions: An introduction to health profession pathways and prerequisites. Olin 138.

* 10:30-11:30 a.m. • GROUP ADVISING, Cordiner Auditorium. This session is designed to provide first-year students with crucial information regarding college policies, advising and registration.

11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. • NEW STUDENTS AND FAMILY LUNCH, Prentiss Hall Front Lawn (Reid Campus Center in case of rain). Lunch is complimentary for new students; there is a $14.25 charge for adults and a $7.00 charge for children 12 and under.

*12:30 -4:10 p.m.• ACADEMIC ADVISING/LIBRARY ORIENTATION/CIRP SURVEY ROTATION. New students have been assigned a time to meet with their academic adviser, tour the Penrose Library and participate in the CIRP survey. A personalized schedule is located in your New Student Packet—please refer to it for the times and locations of your meetings.

• ACADEMIC ADVISING, Advisers’ Offices. New students will meet individually with their academic adviser to discuss classes and plan a fall semester schedule.

• LIBRARY ORIENTATION, Penrose Library Foyer. New students will participate in a 30-minute orientation and tour of Penrose Library.

• CIRP FIRST-YEAR SURVEY (first-year students only), Olin 138. CIRP is a national survey that asks first-year college students their views on a wide range of questions, including student characteristics, goals and opinions. The survey takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.

*4:30-5:30 p.m. • WHITMAN COLLEGE OPENING CONVOCATION, Cordiner Hall. All students and family members are cordially invited to attend this event that marks the formal opening of the college year. New students will be seated as a class for this event. Susanne Beechey, Associate Professor of Politics, will deliver the Convocation address.

5:30-6:15 p.m. • FAMILY FAREWELL RECEPTION, Cordiner Side Lawn ( Reid Campus Center in case of rain) . Family members and new students are invited to join President Kathleen Murray and members of the administration for a post-Convocation reception.

6:30-7 p.m. • CALLING ALL JEWS, Prentiss Spirituality Room, Prentiss Hall. Parents and students please come join us for a 30-minute informal session and learn about Jewish life in Walla Walla. Students from Whitman’s Hillel group and representatives from the local congregation, Congregation Beth Israel, will meet for a short Shabbat celebration and chat. All Jews, even non-religious, are welcome.

6:30-7:30 p.m. •END OF THE SUMMER COOKOUT, Ankeny Field ( Reid Campus Center in case of rain) . New students will join their RA and SA for a festive section dinner on Ankeny Field.

*7:45-8:45 p.m. • “WELCOME TO THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE,” Cordiner Hall. Christa Keim Schmeder will share keys to success and inspire you to think about the college experience and the life you want to live.

9-11 p.m. • DESSERT PALOOZA & HYPNOTIST DOUG THOMPSON, Cordiner Side Lawn/Cordiner Auditorium. Dessert will be served on the Cordiner side lawn following the Christa Keim Schemder talk. Students are then invited back into the auditorium to experience Doug Thompson--amazing comedian and hypnotist--who merges comedy, impressions, and his quick wit into a show that will leave you talking about for months.

This session focuses on the history and heritage of the Walla Walla Valley from the perspective of the Native American Tribes, and the role of the missionaries Marcus and Narcissa Whitman. The session will give you a strong sense of your new home, and how the college’s attitude toward the home it shares has changed over time.

6-7:30 p.m. • FIRST FOODS DINNER, Hunter Front Lawn (Reid Campus Center in case of rain). Join us for a taste of a Native American First Foods meal. Open to students on a meal plan.

*7:45-8:45 p.m. • “CAMPUS SAFETY AND YOU,” Cordiner Hall. Members of the Security and Safety staffs will review critical safety issues with students.

9-11 p.m. • NIGHT@REID, Reid Campus Center. Join the staff of Reid Campus Center for a night of fun, fun, fun! Activities will include RockBand, Wii games, Bingo, Karaoke, food, prizes and more!

*7:45-8:45 p.m. • S.O.S. (Secrets of Success), Residence Hall Main Lounges. First-year students are invited to a presentation to meet their Student Academic Adviser. Your hall’s SAs will discuss their role in supporting your academic transition to Whitman by introducing some of their Secrets of Success!

9-11 p.m. • VIDEO DANCE PARTY, Reid Campus Center, Young Ballroom. Join the Whitman Events Board (WEB) for our first ever video dance party! An in house DJ will transport the audience back in time to the beginnings of pop music and take them through its evolution right up to present day. Light refreshments will also be provided.

10 a.m.-1 p.m. • STUDENT ACTIVITIES FAIR, Cordiner Side Lawn. Representatives from various student clubs and organizations will provide information about getting involved at Whitman. Local businesses and organizations also will offer information about Walla Walla.

11 a.m.-2 p.m. • LUNCH, Prentiss Dining Hall. Open to students on a meal plan.

12:30-2 p.m. • “GAP YEAR” STUDENT LUNCH, Reid Campus Center Ballroom B. This event is designed for first-year students who took a “gap year” between high school and college to meet each other and get acquainted.

1-1:30 p.m. • HOW TO FIND AN ON-CAMPUS JOB WORKSHOP, Kimball Auditorium. Learn about the process of applying to on-campus jobs, and get special tips from the Student Engagement Center.

1:30-3 p.m. • ON-CAMPUS JOB FAIR, Hunter Front Lawn. Meet employers and hiring managers from offices all around campus, and learn about jobs that are currently being offered.

1-4 p.m. • SHUTTLE TO WALMART, Reid Campus Center Information Desk. Opening Week assistants will provide a shuttle service to the local Walmart for new students. Please check-in at the information desk at Reid Campus Center to arrange a ride.

4-5 p.m. • THEATRE AND DANCE INFORMATIONAL MEETING, Harper Joy Theatre, Freimann Theatre. Interested in theatre or dance? We invite you to attend this meeting to learn about the department and the faculty, meet the student Drama Club, and tour Harper Joy Theatre. We will talk about the 2018 -2019 season and upcoming auditions, plus current student job openings in the department.

5-9 p.m. • DINNER, Prentiss Dining Hall. Open to students on a meal plan.

*7:30-9:30 p.m. • “VOICES OF WHITMAN,” Amphitheatre (Cordiner Hall in case of rain). Current students will reflect on their college experiences, sharing how Whitman has shaped them, and in turn, how they have shaped Whitman in this celebration of diverse perspectives that define the college. Residence hall section discussions will follow the “Voices of Whitman” presentation.

10 p.m. • CAPTURE THE FLAG, Ankeny Field. Everyone is welcome!

*7:30-8:45 p.m. • “‘BEER GOGGLES’ TO BLACKOUTS, ‘THE MUNCHIES’ TO MEMORY PROBLEMS: THE SCIENCE OF ALCOHOL AND MARIJUANA,” Cordiner Auditorium. Dr. Jason Kilmer is a nationally recognized speaker whose presentation will challenge, amuse and educate you on issues relating to alcohol and marijuana. Residence hall section discussions will follow Dr. Kilmer’s presentation.
