Paul Garrett Fellowship

The Paul Garrett Fellowship recognizes and supports outstanding Whitman College faculty members in the early and middle stages of their academic careers. First awarded in 1970 through the Paul Garrett Whitman College Trust, the fellowship is designed to help the college retain exceptional professors who combine a deep commitment to undergraduate teaching with active, creative scholarship.

The Selection Process

Five faculty members typically hold the title of Paul Garrett Fellow at any given time. Fellows are selected from among Whitman’s Assistant and Associate Professors based on excellence in both teaching and scholarship.

Nominations for the Paul Garrett Fellowship are made by the Committee of Division Chairs and reviewed by the Provost. Final selections are made by the President and Provost in recognition of exemplary teaching and scholarly achievement that advance Whitman’s academic mission.

Since the program’s inception, 65 faculty members have been named Paul Garrett Fellows, contributing significantly to the intellectual vibrancy and teaching excellence that define Whitman College.

Benefits of the Paul Garrett Fellowship

In addition to their regular academic rank, each recipient carries the title of Paul Garrett Fellow until they are promoted to the next faculty rank. In addition to the title, fellows receive a professional development stipend that remains an ongoing addition to their base salary, even when they are later promoted and no longer hold the fellow title.
