Student Funding Request (Google Form)

Faculty Group Request (Google Form)

The Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty has modest funds to support students who are presenting their research at conferences.  Funding is intended to support the presentation of research connected to a student’s academic work at Whitman College and not at any other institution.  Please note that we are currently unable to provide funding for travel related to conducting thesis research.

Each student may receive funding for only one conference per academic year.

The maximum award is $1,000 per current Whitman student.  Students may only receive funding for one conference per academic year.

Eligible expenses may include airfare, lodging, conference registration fees, ground transportation, and meals (up to $50/day).  Specific allowances and policies will be provided in more detail after funding has been approved.

As funding is to support students who are presenting their research, we strongly encourage students to consider making travel arrangements that are necessary only for this purpose.  For example, it may not be necessary for a student to stay for the entire duration of a conference that spans multiple days.

Students are strongly encouraged to seek support from other sources such as ASWC, their department, or the host institution/association. Students may contact the ASWC Finance Committee chair at aswc_finance@whitman.edu for questions about ASWC funding.

Requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and approval is not guaranteed.

Regarding payment of costs, please note the following

  • Per college policy, airfare must be purchased using a Whitman purchasing card.  Students should work with Laurie Doohan (doohanlk@whitman.edu), Senior Academic Assistant in the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty for assistance purchasing airline tickets.
  • For large expenses (e.g. conference registration, lodging, etc.) students should work with Laurie Doohan to make arrangements to pay for costs upfront using a Whitman College purchasing card.  This helps to avoid large out-of-pocket expenses directly incurred by the student.

Students should submit their funding request via this form.

The application deadline this year is November 15, 2025. Students are encouraged to apply early.

Note:  For faculty who are interested in submitting a group request, please use this form.
