IES: Berlin Language and Area Studies
The IES: Berlin Language and Area Studies Program in Germany provides students with an opportunity to study the German language and about Germany in this thriving cultural and political center at the crossroads of East and West. Students can enroll either in courses with other US students at the IES Center or in courses with German students at Humboldt Universitat. All courses are taught by local faculty in German. To further facilitate cultural immersion, participants live in apartments with Germans, typically young professionals or families.
“It was the experience of a lifetime. Particularly for students like me, who come from rural towns and then live in Walla Walla, Berlin is the perfect city to introduce one to urban living. It is huge, lively and diverse; but at the same time it has enough parks and quiet places that it never feels overwhelming. You learn every day in Berlin, whether you have class or not. This city is the perfect intersection between the past and future, between east and west. One cannot match the Berlin experience in any other city.” Noah O. ‘17
