Summer Study Abroad

If you are thinking about studying in a foreign country during the summer and wish to transfer the credit to your Whitman degree, the factors that the OCS Committee considers when approving credit are:

  • CREDITS must be documented on an official transcript from an accredited foreign university or U.S. institution, or an institution that is recognized by the Ministry of Education in that country.
  • TRANSCRIPT must include the course title, number of credits, and a letter grade.
  • PASS/FAIL  courses are not acceptable for transfer credit.
  • The OCS COMMITTEE reviews the course description/syllabus and determine that the course(s) are suitable for transfer credit at Whitman College.

Please note that approval for summer transfer credit is not guaranteed. Therefore, we recommend that students wait to pay program enrollment deposits and fees until they have received official notification from Off-Campus Studies about transfer credit approval.

Summer Study Abroad FAQs - Please review the Summer Study Abroad FAQs that have been compiled by the Whitman OCS Advising team.

Summer Study Abroad Transfer Credit Application- Complete a Whitman Summer Study Abroad Transfer Credit Application and submit it to the Off-Campus Studies Office (Mem 205) at least three weeks before your program's application deadline. Credit for foreign study must be approved prior to participating in the program.  Whitman does not award credit retroactively, so you do need to apply in advance to find out if the courses you plan to take abroad will transfer to Whitman.  Please note that application through the OCS office is for international study and not domestic.

Program Admission Application - In addition to the Whitman application, you will need to submit a Program Admission Application directly to your actual study abroad program.  The Program Admission Application can be found on the program website. The deadlines for most summer programs are typically between February and April.

Whitman Summer Studies in China is a six week academic program administered by Whitman College in cooperation with Yunnan University in Kunming specifically for Whitman students interested in Chinese Studies. Full and partial need based scholarship aid is available by the David Deal China Exchange Endowment.
