Associated Kyoto Program (AKP)

The Associated Kyoto Program (AKP) is sponsored by a consortium of 13 liberal arts colleges including Whitman College. Located on the campus of Doshisha University in downtown Kyoto, AKP offers a rigorous program of intensive Japanese language courses and Japanese area studies courses taught in English by faculty from the member colleges and local scholars. In addition to cultural activities and field trips associated with specific courses, the program offers one overnight trip each semester to places like Hiroshima, Miyajima and Ise. Kyoto is a bustling city of 1.5 million and is renowned for its historic gardens and temples.

Fields of study:	Intensive Japanese language courses and elective courses in areas such as literature, history, film, economics, politics, and contemporary society.
Eligibility:	Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 Minimum Japanese language GPA of 3.0. (Higher language GPA may be required for single semester applicants.)
Language Prerequisite:	Minimum of one year college-level Japanese language (minimum language GPA of 3.0. Higher language GPA may be required for single semester applicants.) One Area Studies course on Japan Spring semester only students are expected to have completed two years of college-level Japanese prior to participation, including taking Japanese the fall semester immediately prior to AKP.
Credits:	16 credits per semester - Required Courses: Intensive Japanese language (8 credits) Two elective courses (4 credits each)
Internships:	Students may apply for approved internships
Housing:	Homestay with a Japanese Family
Meals:	Students take their breakfast and dinner with their host family and are provided with a stipend for lunches.
Semesters Offered:	Fall, Spring, Academic Year
Calendar:	Late August-December; January-April
Deadline:	December of the student's sophomore year for participation as a junior.
