Middlebury: Getafe Universidad Carlos III de Madrid
Through Middlebury College, Whitman students may enroll at La Universidad Carlos III in Getafe, just outside Madrid. Carlos III was founded in 1989 and currently enrolls about 18,000 students, most of who commute 20 minutes by train from the city of Madrid. The University offers a broad range of liberal arts courses and is especially strong in the social sciences. This program is well suited for students who wish to live in a major metropolitan area in Spain and, at the same time, study alongside Spanish students.
“Madrid has more stuff to do and see than can be done and seen in a semester. There are always holidays with free festivals and cultural activities left and right. The architecture is breathtaking. I loved the public transportation system; it’s one of the best in the entire world! I loved walking everywhere, and that everything is somehow within walking distance. The Middlebury-Carlos III students became a really tight-knit group of friends, and we spent lots of time together, like potluck dinners...There was enough time for a couple of weekend trips out of town to Lisbon, Augsburg, and other parts of Spain. The culture in this country is wonderfully different from that of the US." - Jenna C. ‘14
