Through IES, qualified students may enroll directly at the Vrije Universiteit (VU), an international recognized research university in the vibrant city of Amsterdam. IES participants enroll in psychology and/or science courses taught in English alongside Dutch and other international students at the VU. Students also enroll in Dutch language at VU and and may opt to take one course at the IES Center with other study abroad students.

Eligibility:

Minimum cumulative gpa of 3.0. (Applicants with a 2.9-3.0 cumulative gpa will be considered on a case-by-case basis.)

Credits:

15-18 credits per semester  - Required Courses:

  • Four psychology or science courses taught in English at the VU University (3 credits each)
  • Everyday Dutch course at VU (3 credits)

OR

  • Two psychology or science courses taught in English at the VU University (3 credits each)
  • Everyday Dutch course at VU (3 credits)
  • One IES Abroad Center-taught area studies course (6 credits)

IMPORTANT COURSE SELECTION NOTE: Fall semester students enroll in up to two Period 1 and up to two Period 2 courses. Spring semester students enroll in up to two Period 3 courses and up to two Period 4 courses.

Credit Conversion:

1 IES credit = 1 Whitman credit

Housing:

Students will live in a single room with private bathroom in student housing at the VU. There is a shared kitchen available for preparing meals.

Meals:

Students will prepare their own meals in the student housing or take their meals at a student cafeteria (Mensa) or local restaurants in Amsterdam.
