Through CIEE, students with beginner to advanced experience in Spanish can study abroad on one of three program tracks based in Alicante, Spain, which lies on the Mediterranean Coast.  The Language in Context track is designed for students with no to little experience with the Spanish language.  Students will take intensive language courses in Spanish and supplement their course plan with area studies courses taught in English.  The Language and Culture track offers intensive language study for intermediate language students with area studies courses taught in Spanish at the CIEE Study Center.  The more advanced students will enroll in the Liberal Arts track with a course plan consisting of intensive language courses and area studies courses taken in Spanish at the CIEE Study Center or the Universidad de Alicante.  Participants on all tracks will have opportunities to immerse themselves in the culture through a number of activities including a conversation exchange program, the Universidad de Alicante’s International Club, and various excursions around Spain.

"Unlike in some of the larger cities like Barcelona or Madrid, I found that I was often forced to speak Spanish when I spoke to locals or entered local establishments. I think staying with a host family that didn’t speak much English also helped integrate me into Spanish culture. I got to eat typical Spanish food cooked by my family, I went on typical outings such as my host sister’s flamenco dance recital, and I learned a lot about Spanish culture through lunch and dinner conversations...I recommend this program to everyone. I met incredible people, had great experiences, and traveled to places I only dreamed of going to.” - Elyse L. ‘17 (Language in Context)

“The friends I made while abroad are now some of my closest friends. Additionally, I gained a second family. My host family was incredible and I was paired perfectly by CIEE according to my wishes...Living with my host family made my time in Spain the overwhelmingly positive experience that it was. I cannot recommend living with a host family highly enough. You will feel much more connected to the city, your studies, and other students that live with host families. I owe all of the cultural immersion that took place in Alicante to my host family.” - Andrew R. ‘17 (Liberal Arts)
