Fall Composers Concert Features Student Compositions

The Whitman College Department of Music will showcase original pieces created by students at its annual Fall Composers Concert this Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018.

The event will feature original pieces from Bryce Weber, Neal Christopherson, who also serves as Whitman's director of Institutional Research, and Cory Cogley '19, which will be performed by students and faculty members playing woodwinds, guitars and piano. The composers are students of Professor John David Earnest. 

Bryce Weber, a senior music major at Walla Walla University, studies composition as part of the reciprocal student arrangement between Walla Walla University and Whitman. Weber's chamber work, "A River," is written for bassoon and piano.

Neal Christopherson has studied composition for six semesters and has written a piece for flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, and piano, titled, "Cousins Suite."

Cory Cogley will present his new work for two guitars titled "Mist" Variations on a Theme by Bela Bartok.

"Each of these composers has a uniquely personal musical style which is displayed through aural imagery and instrumental color, thus creating a diverse listening experience for the audience," Earnest said.

The concert begins at 3 p.m. Oct. 14 in Chism Recital Hall and is free and open to the public. Following the concert, Earnest and the student composers will host a talk in the lobby to discuss their works.
