Whitman in the top 20 contributors to Teach For America
For the fourth consecutive year, Whitman is one of the top 20 small colleges contributing graduating seniors to Teach For America. Whitman College placed fifth, with 14 graduates joining the TFA teaching corps in fall 2013.
The goal of TFA is to provide opportunities for education to children who are affected by poverty, and its teaching corps consists of professionals and recent college graduates from a diverse range of academic disciplines. In 2013, Whitman's 14 graduates will number among 5,900 new corps members. Each commits two years to teaching in high-need schools in one of 48 regions across the country.
Overall, 14 percent of Whitman's seniors applied to work with TFA this year. Since TFA was founded in 1990, 71 Whitman alumni have taught as corps members. While TFA's recruits come from a number of different backgrounds, they must all have demonstrated outstanding achievement, perseverance and leadership.
