Princeton Review names Whitman a 2013 Best Value College

Princeton Review Best Value Colleges 2013Feb. 5, 2013 –The Princeton Review has once again named Whitman College to its list of 150 “Best Value Colleges.”

The list includes 75 public and 75 private colleges that The Princeton Review has selected for its book, The Best Value Colleges: 2013 Edition. It does not rank the schools beyond the top 10.

According to The Princeton Review, colleges and universities that make the Best Value list share the ability to “provide stellar academics with a modest price tag. Schools are selected based upon institutional data and student opinion surveys collected from fall 2011 through fall 2012. Factors include undergraduate academics, costs, available financial aid, the percentage of graduating seniors who borrowed from any loan program and the average dollar amount of debt those students had at graduation. The publication assigns ratings to the academic program, available financial aid and prices of tuition/room and board/fees minus the average aid awarded.

To develop its 150 Best Value Colleges, The Princeton Review analyzed more than 650 schools and selected “those as the very best academic value,” according to its website. “These schools demonstrate their value in one of two ways: either by offering a very affordable tuition sticker price right off the bat while also delivering a quality education, or by making a higher tuition cost affordable to anyone who is invited to attend. A school does the latter by distributing generous amounts of financial aid in the form of scholarships and grants, possibly combined, to a lesser degree, with work-study and loans. The schools we present here make measurable efforts to keep out-of-pocket costs reasonable and within reach while delivering an amazing college experience that’s worth every penny.”

“It is always gratifying to be recognized by The Princeton Review, because it provides its readers with a starting point for understanding the value of a Whitman College liberal arts education,” said Tony Cabasco, dean of admission and financial aid. “Whitman combines academic excellence with a campus community that thrives on engagement and collaboration. This combination adds profound value that our students carry with them into their lives and careers.”
