Student Rachel Alexander ’13 defends college in Huffington Post blog
Rachel Alexander ’13, a junior politics-environmental studies major from Seattle, has written an opinion piece for the Huffington Post’s College page that is titled “In Defense of College.”
Alexander, who will be next year’s editor-in-chief for the Whitman Pioneer (student newspaper), discusses the “UnCollege” movement, which she says “has argued that college does a poor job of preparing students for real-world jobs.”
Using Whitman as an example, Alexander counters with aspects of a college education that hold value in a variety of ways: “…you don’t need to decide what to do with your life at age 18. I believe that’s absolutely true, and in my mind it’s one of the best reasons to go to college.”
