Kiplinger’s names Whitman No. 26 “best value” in the nation; No. 1 in Northwest

WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Whitman College has once again placed in the top-30 of Kiplinger’s annual ranking of “Best Values in Private Colleges.” Released Oct. 28, the 2010 list ranks the college No. 26 out of 100 private liberal arts schools in the nation, reflecting Whitman’s enduring legacy of providing quality education and exceptional value.

Whitman’s ranking makes it the best value among schools of its kind in the Northwest, and one of just five private liberal arts colleges in the entire Western United States to place in the top-30.

To compile its rankings, Kiplinger’s begins with 600 schools, divided in to separate lists for private universities and private liberal arts colleges. Schools are then measured on the basis of academic quality, enrollment, costs and financial aid. The final result is two lists of 100 schools, each representing the nation’s best values in private higher education.

“Whitman is consistently recognized for offering an unsurpassed liberal arts experience,” said Tony Cabasco, Whitman’s dean of admission and financial aid. “Our ranking as one of the nation’s best values only reaffirms what so many students and alumni already know.”

In addition to the college’s diverse and experiential learning opportunities and close-knit, residential campus, Cabasco added that “the true value of a Whitman education is exemplified in the extraordinary lives and careers of our alumni around the world.”
