WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Northwest University provides the opposition when the Whitman College soccer teams make their season debuts Friday evening on their home pitch.

Action at the Whitman Athletic Fields starts at 5 p.m. with the women's game. The men's game follows at about 7:30 p.m.

Northwest University (Kirkland, Wash.) is a member of the NAIA-affiliated Cascade Collegiate Conference. In CCC preseason polls, both Northwest teams were picked to place fifth in the eight-school league.

Last September, the NU men came to Walla Walla and battled Whitman a 1-1 double-overtime tie. The Eagles finished the 2008 season with records of 6-9-3 overall and 4-7-0 in conference.

Luke Fischer and Brandon Screen, who combined to lead NU in scoring last season with 14 goals and four assists, return for the Eagles. Both players earned All-CCC Honorable Mention recognition last season.

Friday marks the season opener for the NU men, but the Eagle women have already played two games. They lost 8-0 at home to Central Washington earlier this week, after falling 1-0 to Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma. The Eagles outshot PLU 21-8 in that game but failed to convert any of their eight shots on goal.

The NU women were 8-5-2 last season, which included a 7-3-0 record in conference play.

Brittany Marshall, who led the Eagles in scoring last fall with six goals and made the All-CCC First Team, is back again this fall. Britannique Clayberg also returns after collecting three goals and six assists last season.
