WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- About 100 golfers hit the links Friday afternoon for the first-ever Whitman College W Club Golf Tournament.

The 18-hole event begins with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. at the Wine Valley Golf Club, which is in its first year of play about five miles west of Walla.

Tournament proceeds will benefit the varsity sports program at Whitman.

"This will be an annual event, and we're thrilled with the turnout for the tournament's inaugural run," assistant Whitman athletic director Skip Molitor said.

"The field of players represents a nice combination of Whitman alumni on campus this weekend for class reunions, supporters of Whitman athletics from around the Northwest, and local business people and golf enthusiasts."

The tournament, which will follow a four-man best ball format, is aimed at both "fund raising and fun raising," Molitor said. "People are going to have a great time while supporting the W Club and its mission of helping Whitman athletic teams pursue excellence."

About 50 Whitman student-athletes will help run the tournament on a volunteer basis.

On designated holes, prizes await golfers who hit the longest drive as well as tee shots that land closest to the pin, closest to a line drawn down the middle of one fairway, and inside a circle drawn on another fairway.

The tournament will close with an outdoor awards banquet at the golf club. Golfers and fans can also bid on a number of silent auction items.

"We're excited to have our first W Club tournament at Wine Valley, which is one of the truly exceptional new golf courses in the Northwest," Molitor said.
